WTF

you don't need to tell us  -  WE'RE rape SURVIVORS. AND WE'RE HERE TO TEACH YOU HOW TO BE A HELP INSTEAD OF A NUISANCE .

Look, we made you a video:

NOW WHAT?

Trust Part 1: DO assume that a person who is telling you they were raped is telling the truth. After all, telling someone you were raped is nearly guaranteed to be the only thing shittier than getting raped.

Trust Part 2: DON’T assume the person is lying about it. Telling someone you were raped to get attention or privilege is like showing people a handful of your own poop in order to get to the front of the bathroom line. The number of people who lie about being raped are statistically insignificant.

You're Not a Prosecutor: DON'T feel you must approach each and every case of alleged rape as if you are a member of the criminal justice system whose job it is to figure out what actually happened. You are just a person, behave like one.

Smells Like Rape Culture: This whole thing of trying to find a reason the person who is telling you they were raped is lying or interpreting things incorrectly or being over-dramatic is the very definition of rape culture - it’s assuming that rape is rare and that for it to occur there must be a mitigating circumstance. As opposed to it being just a really super shitty Tuesday.

Act Accordingly: Don't assume that someone has not been a sexual assault victim based on their age, gender, ethnicity or social class. If you are in a room, and there are people in it, there is very possibly a sexual assault victim in there. WE ARE EVERYWHERE.
